THE ASSOCIATION

The SIEM was foundedin 1969 and is a professional and cultural non-profit Association, activethroughout the whole of Italy.
The Statute affirmsits commitment to promoting:

Its commitment is basedon cultural aspects with particular emphasis on:It has been a member ofthe ISME (International Society for Music Education) since 1970 and wassubsequently authorized to represent the ISME in Italy.
It is divided intovarious territorial sections covering the whole of Italy (37 in March 2003),each having autonomy in planning and organization.

TRAINING QUALIFICATIONAND PROTOCOL AGREEMENT WITH THE MIUR

The SIEM has recently(2002) been designated by the Italian Ministry of Instruction, Universityand Research (MIUR) as training body for school staff and has drawn upa protocol agreement with the Ministry aimed at:

MEMBERS

The members of theSIEM (1.619 in 2002) come from a wide range of backgrounds: music teachersin schools of every type and level, Conservatories and Universities, scholars,instrumentalists, and those working in the field of music in general.
The Association providesall those involved with the unique opportunity to exchange ideas and allmembers are invited to contribute to discussions regarding the area ofmusic education, with a view to creating continuity within the differentlevels of schooling, both internally and transversally.
Membership of theSIEM is open to all music teachers, and to all individuals, Bodies, Institutionsor Companies sharing the aims of the Association and regularly paying membershipfees.

ACTIVITIES

The regular activity ofthe SIEM consists mainly of courses, seminars, conferences, workshops,publishing and promotional initiatives whose scope, in accordance withthe objectives of the statute, is to train and update educators of everysort involved in music education (basic, specialist, special) or in anyway interested in the furtherance of music in the field of education.
On some occasionsthe Association promotes initiatives dealing directly with the music educationof young people and adults.

In its 30 years ormore of national activity the SIEM has organized:

It has published manybooks about music teaching and has issued summaries of its experience andstudies through its newsletters and periodic publications (Musica Domani,Quadernidi Musica Domani, Quaderni della SIEM, SIEM Informazione).
The SIEM has beenentrusted with the scientific support for the series Educazione Musicale,published by EDT (Edizioni di Torino).

The activities of theSIEM may be organized by the national bodies or by the 42 territorial sections,independently or in collaboration with bodies and institutions in the publicsector (central and peripheral scholastic administration, schools or universities,local bodies, etc.) and private sector (schools, cultural associations,publishing houses or other types of business, etc.) involved in the spreadingof musical culture.
Every year, in accordancewith the protocol agreement stipulated with the Ministry of Instruction,Universities and Research (MIUR), the SIEM also presents, in collaborationwith the territorial sections, a preliminary project of research and studyon themes relating to music education and the training of music teachers.
